Porcelain Veneers

Placement of a veneer onto a toothWhat are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers, also known as porcelain laminates, are ultra-thin custom-made caps that are mounted onto the frontal surface of your teeth to hide imperfections and create a bright, even smile.

Veneers may be made of either porcelain or from a composite resin that is similar to dental bonding. Although they are more expensive, porcelain veneers are also more durable and attractive than composite resin veneers. They are also more stain-resistant and glossier. And porcelain reflects light in a manner that is similar to that of natural tooth enamel, which makes porcelain veneers look more natural than their resin counterparts.

What are porcelain veneers used for?

Porcelain veneers may be used to alter the color, shape, size, or length of any tooth. Porcelain or composite resin veneers may be used to achieve the following improvements:

  • To create an even, uniform appearance in the smile, with all the teeth sized proportionately to one another
  • To fill in gaps between teeth
  • To correct discolored or stained teeth, and make all the teeth the same color

Veneers provide an effective cover for teeth that have become dull and discolored, whether it’s due to a root canal treatment, smoking, medications, excessive fluoride, or any other cause. They also effectively cover and improve the appearance of teeth that have become worn down or broken or have suffered damage such as chips and cracks.

Veneers also improve the look of teeth that may be slightly crooked, uneven, and/or misshapen, as well as teeth that have surface imperfections on them.

How long do porcelain veneers last?

Porcelain veneers are quite durable and are designed to last anywhere between 7 and 15 years, although in many patients, porcelain veneers have lasted for much longer than this. It is recommended that you plan to replace your veneers after about 15 years if you haven’t done so before then.

Do porcelain veneers require special care?

Porcelain veneers look and feel like natural teeth and may be cared for just like your natural teeth, by observing a good oral hygiene routine, brushing regularly, and getting regular checkups. It is always recommended that you brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once daily, as well as using an antiseptic mouthwash, and observing a balanced diet that restricts the intake of sticky, sugary foods and acidic beverages.
